BEYOND FLAT
Two weeks - 10 am - noon on a weekday morning
(day TBA)
each session: 2 hours
Techniques explored in this class will be forging, sinking, bougeing, raising, planishing, hydraulic press forming, the use of the rolling mill, and fold forming. Most of this work will be done in copper or aluminum. This exploratory course is a great place to start, and even a great class to repeat. Students will make a vessel and a bracelet or apron hook in this class at a minimum.
This is an exploratory class about 3-dimensional forms in metal. It begins with two basic statements. Many will tell you that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. They are probably right. I’ve always chosen the more interesting path over the shortest. For me, the more interesting path is the curved line. For this class only We will explore what would happen if our motto was, “straight line bad, curved metal line good; flat metal bad, formed good!”
If you are surrounded by people obsessed with the shortest way, the straight line, the fastest way, and need a break. Then this class is for you. This class seeks an alternative way, the more interesting curved path. A curved shape or path with surprises around the bends and folds for your eyes to rest in. is well worth exploring.
