Woodturning Program

BASIC WOODTURNING
( pre-requisite for all other woodturning classes except pen making)
Saturdays

ELEMENTS: Lathe Set-up; Tools; Sharpening Tools; Safety; and Wood characteristics.

This class is designed to show the student the lathe and how it is used. Tools that are used for certain aspects of turning wood and how to sharpen these tools for the best performance in cutting the wood. Safety will be of the utmost importance and discussed in depth to ensure no serious injuries. We will discuss woods and characteristics of woods to be used on the lathe. You will experience hands on training and produce a spindle or bowl to take home.

Class size: 6
Tools Required: Safety goggles and a dusk mask
Time: 7 hours with a lunch break

PEN MAKING
Tuesday/Thursday evenings

ELEMENTS: Drilling wood blanks; Gluing up barrels; Turning the pen on the lathe; Applying the finish; Assembly of the pen.

This class is designed to show the student how to make a pen from a beautiful piece of wood. The wood blank is usually exotic and colorful. You will perform all the steps it takes to make the pen. At the end of the class you will be the proud owner of an European/Monte Blanc Style Pen. Great to keep or give as a gift.

END GRAIN TURNING

ELEMENTS; Mounting a small log between centers; Truing up the outside;Hollowing the inside; Creating a Goblet or a Lidded Box as an end result; Applying the finish.

This class will show the student how a raw piece of wood can be turned into a beautiful vessel. Roughing it out and designing a vessel that can be functional. This class will surely bring out your passion when you see and feel your hidden talent. Learning this can take you to higher levels of turning.

NATURAL EDGED BOWLS
Tuesday/Thursday evenings

ELEMENTS: Mounting a bowl blank between centers; Truing up the outside designing a desired shape; Hollowing out the inside and refining the shape; Applying the finish.

This class will show the student how to take a raw piece of wood with the bark on it and turn it into a beautiful bowl. Natural edged bowls allow us to view nature in its rawest form and to bring it into our homes. This class will bring you completely in touch with a tree as you cut through the bark, sapwood and into the heartwood to discover the beautiful movement in a log. Much conversation will take place in your home when you finish this piece.

PEPPER MILLS
Tuesday/Thursday evenings
6:30-9:30 pm

ELEMENTS: Mounting a kiln dried square piece of stock between centers; cutting a design on the outside; hollowing the inside; finishing the wood; assembly of the parts for the pepper mill; Applying the finish.

This class will show the student how to make a grinding functional pepper mill that can be used in the home. Choices of wood are variable and the colors can be matched to you home décor. You will make a 6” pepper mill from the wood block to the finished product to be used in and displayed in your home adding a beautiful piece to your kitchen or dining room.
